Notes: Phil ran 7.05/190.27 at NHRA Gainesville on March 11. He was in New England in May for its Potpourri Nationals. A 7.13/189.07 qualified #1 for the eight-car field, and in the first round, his 7.20/191.89 defeated Rodalyn Knox's 7.35/187. A consistent 7.20 at 182.18 in the semi-final beat Al Kenney's 7.48/181. He faced Dall Hall's sb Chevy-powered car in the final, and Dale had just set Low ET in his semi-final win, so Phillips pushed the tree too hard and fouled. Shortly after that, he was at Maple Grove for the Dutch Classic. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field, and in the opening round, his 7.02/185.18 upset Joe Amato, who lost a blower belt. In October, Phillips was the first alternate at Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals with a 6.94/195.22 best. He got into the show when Doug Moody's Corvette broke, but he lost to Jerry Gwynn in round one. |
