Notes: Smart crashed this car at Bristol. Smart may have "crashed,", but I've also read that this car was eventually sold to John Force. - Tim Simplot | Jody Smart raced his Firebird early in the season. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, Smart qualified this car on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field at Baton Rouge with a 6.05/249.03. In the opening round, his 6.20/239.48 lost to Rick Johnson's 6.01/245 in the "Hawaiian." http://www.ultimateracinghistory.com/racelist2.php?uniqid=47425 |

Notes: Paul's season started with this car late in April at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was only an eight-car field and Smith's 6.13 qualified #6. Unfortunately, he had problems in the first round, and shut down against eventual winner Tripp Shumake in Johnny Loper's Arrow. He also qualified #6 at Rockingham's eight-car show for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Sadly, he once again had problems and shut down on the line in the first round, against Kenny Bernstein. Two weeks later (May 17), he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. A 6.31 qualified on the "bump"(#8). An opening round 6.30 beat Shirl Greer's 6.47 in Larry Coogle's "Sting." In the semifinals, he lost to a quick-leaving Billy Meyer whose 6.48 beat Smith's slightly quicker 6.45. He was at Englishtown for the Night of Thrills race. All ten Funny Cars made two passes with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Paul’s times were not good enough to make the final as a first-round 6.43/226 lost to eventual winner Frank Hawley's 6.08/234 in the "Chi-Town Hustler" and a 7.08/137.82 in his second race lost to John Speelman's 6.55/207. He was back at Englishtown in July for the NHRA Summernationals. A 6.10/240.64 qualified #9. Problem was, he hurt some parts on the pass. He ordered new parts to be sent by overnight express. Paul took $4,800 cash to pay for the parts, but he was robbed by two gunmen who stole the money. His first-round opponent, low qualifier Bernstein, loaned the team the parts they needed for their first-round race. In their race, Bernstein’s 6.08/238 beat Paul's 6.17/231.36. Shortly after that, Smith was at Atlanta for a four-car show, but there a first-round 6.53/205 lost to Dale Pulde's 6.33/230. On July 26, he was at Atlanta again for the NHRA Eastern Regional race. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.42/229.59. But more bad luck stepped in when his 'chute released in the first round, against Roy Harris. Early in August, he stopped off at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. He qualified #7 and an opening round 6.50 upset Bernstein at 6.70. But even in winning, his luck was not good as the car broke and he was unable to return in the semifinals so Bernstein was reinstated. Pontiac version of the Chevy Citation body. Former Billy Meyer Hawaiian Tropic Citation. |

Notes: Tharp started the '75 season in this car at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #12. He lost to Shirl Greer in the first round. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #9 with a 6.373/223.88. He lost to Bill Leavitt in the first round. He failed to qualify at the next couple of races, the IHRA Winternationals, where it was only an eight-car show, and at the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 6.617 just missed (first alternate). He was at Odessa International Raceway in Texas for its Winternationals. A first-round 6.92/212.76 beat Larry Gould's Mustang; in the semifinals, a 7.67 beat Chip Woodall's out-of-shape Satellite. He lost in the final to John White driving Ron Salisbury's Vega. He ran a best of 6.70 in eliminations at the IHRA Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham, but a blown rear end in the semifinals against Greer ended his chances for a win. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals, where his 6.686/216.86 was the first alternate, but he won the fourth NHRA Division 4 race at Oklahoma City. Won Division 4 in 1975. The only non-GM Funny Car that Burkhart ran sold to Larry Brown? Did Richard run a 6.345 somewhere in this car? |

Notes: Gary surprised a lot of people at the AHRA Winternationals when he ran 6.24 to qualify #2 behind Don Prudhomme's 6.23. Unfortunately, he got out of shape in the first round, and shut off, losing to Henry Harrison. On May 5, Gary was at Firebird International for the Coors 32-car Funny Car race. He ran a career best 6.08. Gary made the final, but finished runner-up to John Force. He bettered his previous best on May 13 at Famoso for the Bakersfield meet. There he qualified #6 with his best ever (to this point) 5.99 in the eight-car show. He lost to Don Prudhomme in the first round. | Ran at an Oct. 5th '84 Funny Car match race at Carlsbad. The race featured a 'Goose/Grose final. Grose went 5.93 and 5.89 to win. Chi-Town was there (6.05) Dunn's new Mustang, Densham, Checker Auto Parts Citation, Amos Satterlee the CC, and Tom Ridings in the Lidtke Trans Am. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Former boat racer, who won the championships in 1983 and 1984. Brought Amos Satterlee there to tune. Amos stayed with him on this effort. Partner Gerry Hammond of Romar Roofing from Dana Point, Ca. Partner & sponsor Gordon A Padgett from Fairfield, Ohio. Padgett had a drag boat and said that if Brad continued to drive his boat, he would sponsor him in the funny car. Photo from Indy 1986. Ran a 5.92 also. Car was owned by Joe Pisano, a Tony Casarez chassis that needed construction. Brad took it to Sherm Gunn at M&S Welding, who put it together. - Brad Tuttle, Racin & Rockin with Draglist.com, 2/29/16 | Formerly listed 5.800 from Indy 1985. We have found that run did not occur, but did it happen elsewhere? Let us know if you can provide this info. - Rob McCabe |

Notes: Mike was at Ontario Motor Speedway for its New Year's Day race. It was an eight-car field, and in the first round, he fouled at 7.54/195 against eventual winner Tripp Shumake. He qualified #6 at Tucson for the sixteen-car field for the AHRA Winternationals. He beat Steve Harris in the opening round, and a 6.81 in round two defeated Dick Custy. In the semifinals, Tom Hoover smoked the tires against him, and Mike advanced with a 6.82. He faced Shirl Greer in the final, and Mike's 6.84/207.85 got the victory over Shirl's 8.00. The following weekend (January 25), he went to Beeline Dragway for the Phoenix Winter Classic. It was another sixteen-car show, and he qualified #12. But he had issues and could not show for his first-round race against Gordie Bonin. In May,he was at Atco Dragway for a Coca-Cola Cavalcade race. His 7.03/193 in the first round beat Dick Bourgeois, but only the four quickest runs moved into the semifinals, and his time was not quick enough to advance. Mike did not run any NHRA national events this year. |

Notes: Johnny West's brother. West qualified on the "bump" at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals with an 8.37. In the first round, he advanced when Gene Snow crossed the centerline. Unfortunately, West’s Vega broke on the run, and Snow was reinstated for round two. West was at El Paso Dragway in mid-May for the NHRA Division Four race. In the first round, the car broke on the line against Frank O'Brien. |

Notes: West was at Tucson in Jan for the AHRA Winternationals. A 6.65 qualified #5 in the eight-car field, and he improved to 6.55/225.50 in the first round. Unfortunately, Don Prudhomme was in the other lane and ran 6.43 for the win. | Johnny perfected doing a burnout & dry hop on alky and then staging and running on nitro. | I was a huge draw with this setup. It helped me save money, but mostly helped promoters book me as the little guy taking on the big guys. It led to a lot of bookings. Plan A name came from Johnny and Jim West saying they would race a fuel altered, funny car, and top fuel car - Plan A, B, and C. - Johnny West, Draglist LIVE, 2/3/20 |

Notes: Jim White and car owner Dick Moritz were unable to race at either Darlington or Gainesville as the team was still getting their support truck and backup equipment ready. White was at Tulsa for the third race of the ADRA season, the Springnationals. He qualified #1 at 5.88, but he smoked the tires in the first round and lost to Tom Hoover. Shortly after that (May 19), he was at Alamo Dragway for another eight-car show run in conjunction with the NHRA Division Four race. His 5.98/219.00 qualified second to John Force's 5.91/237. But the team damaged the engine, and he could not run in eliminations. Don Sosenka replaced him in the field. In August, the team ran their first NHRA national event in Brainerd. They qualified #16 at 6.001/238.72 but lost in round one to Rick Johnson, 5.89/254 to a 14-seconde shutoff. Jim also qualified #16 at NHRA Indy at 5.838/247.38. In round one, he lost to John Lombardo, 5.78/252 to a 15-second shutoff. In Phoenix for the NHRA Fallnationals, Jim qualified #8 at 5.899/233.76. In round one, he beat Gary Ritter, 5.912/239.36 to 5.97/241. In round two, Rick Johnson got to him, 5.97/249 to 6.064/245.23. At the NHRA World Finals, Jim was the fifth alternate at 5.977/246.30. Speed might be from an ADRA race. Won Green Valley WWCS match race in debut with a 5.96 best. Photo from 1985 Nationals. |

Notes: The "Hawaiian" did not have a perfect season performance-wise early in '75. Wilcox started the season at the New Year's Day race at Fremont. He failed to make the final but had an interesting first-round race with Don Prudhomme when both smoked the tires. Don won with a 7.41 to Norm's 7.59. At the Irwindale Grand Premiere, he qualified #11 in the sixteen-car field but broke on the line in the first round, giving Bob Pickett the win. Norm failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with best times of 6.77/178.21. At the Irwindale Funny Car Championships, Wilcox won his first-round race easily, and in round two of the 32 car show, his 6.76 beat Bob Pickett in the "Lil' Demon." He lost to Gary Burgin in round three when he shut down with problems. The team ventured to Dragway 42 in May for the AHRA Grandnationals. It was a sixteen-car field, and Wilcox qualified in the bottom half of the field (#11), but once eliminations started, they did alright. Norm's 7.08 in the first round beat Vic Cecelia's 7.97. In the second round, a 7.12 advanced over a troubled John Luna at 19.29, but he lost to eventual winner “Jungle Jim" Liberman in the semifinals. Tri-City Dragway held its seventh annual Manufacturer's Funny Car Championships, and the "Hawaiian" was there. All eight cars were to make three runs. It was not a good day for Norm. An off-pace 7.97 in his first race lost to Vic Cecelia’s 6.96. In round two, he blew the tires off of it in a loss to Larry Fullerton's "Trojan Horse," and he lost to Denny Savage, driving the "Chi-Town Hustler," when he smoked the tires once again. Shortly after that, the team was at Martin, Michigan, for an eight-car show. Eventual winner Jim Nicoll beat Wilcox in the first round when the "Hawaiian" got out of shape, and Norm clicked it off to a 9.40-73.40. The next stop was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, where Norm qualified #8 in the sixteen-car show and lasted until round two before losing to Tom Hoover's 6.56/199 with a 6.62/208. The team ran 6.58/208.33 bests there. In July, the team was also at Union Grove for the IHRA Summernationals, but Norm failed to reach the finals. Late in July, things started to improve. They were at Portland for the big 32-car Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships. Wilcox ran a great 6.35/213 in his opening race over Roger Lindamood's 6.91. This was a race where all cars ran three races, and the two Low ET cars would meet in the final. His ET got him into the final against Jerry Ruth, but those gremlins crept in - the Monza broke on the line giving Ruth a single for the win. The Funny Car Spectacular followed up that race in Edmonton, Alberta. Once again, all cars made three runs. Norm beat Twig Zeigler in his first race before the car failed to start for his match with Raymond Beadle driving the "Blue Max" in round two. But he was able to come back and win his third race over a tire-smoking Terry Capp. The team reverted to the wrong direction in performance at the Seafair Funny Car Championships in Seattle. It was a 32-car field with the two Low ET cars from three rounds of racing meeting in the final. The "Hawaiian" went up in smoke in its first race while losing to Zeigler, and in round two, the car broke on the line against John Collins. An 11:00 pm curfew kept the team from running a third race. We needless to say, Wilcox failed to make the final. It was disappointing to many to see Norm's name among the non-qualifiers at the PHR Championships, but the car just wasn't running as it should have been. Just how far off the team was shown at the IHRA Nationals run at Dragway 42 in West Salem in mid-August. It was a sixteen-car field, and Norm qualified #13. But sitting ahead of him were some surprising names: Donny Plunkett, Rodger Hamrick, and Jackie Price, just to name a few. Not to take anything away from these guys, but their budget was next to nothing compared to that of car owner Roland Leong. Norm lost in round one to Dale Pulde. The following week (August 24), Wilcox finished runner-up to Gene Snow at the IHRA Gateway Nationals in St. Louis. At the NHRA US Nationals, Norm's 6.429/226.70 qualified on the "bump." He ran a nice 6.279/218.44 to upset Gary Cochran's 6.95/216 in round one, but he fell off to an 11-second run in round two that lost to Bob Pickett's 6.39/229. However, the team got it figured out by the World Finals in Ontario. Wilcox was the number two qualifier at 6.179/232.55, right after Don Prudhomme's 6.15/241.53. He improved to a sterling 6.164/218.97 to defeat Jake Johnston's 6.31/220 in the first round. Unfortunately, the team did not show for round two [I think having suffered a horrendous fire - BP], sending Denny Savage and the Chi-Town team on to an eventual final round finish. |

Notes: Guzman won the NHRA Division 5 Opener in April at Pueblo Motorsports Park. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying with a 6.32/219.99. In the final, he beat Dave Benjamin for the title. He won the subsequent Division 5 race at Amarillo, where once again, he set Low ET and Top Speed with 6.29/228.90 times. In the final, he won with a slow 9.75 when Paul Gordon, driving Dick Williams Firebird, crossed the center line and was disqualified. Rob was on his own turf when the NHRA tour ran in Denver at Bandimere for the Mile High Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.26 behind Billy Meyer's 6.23. It was an eight-car show, and in round one, his 6.29/232.55 beat John Force. He soloed in the semifinals when Henry Harrison fired to fire in the "L. A. Hooker" Corvette. In the final, he met Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" and it took a Low ET of the meet run of 6.19 at 234 to beat Williams close 6.21/233.76 for the victory. It was a good showing for the "Assassination" team. Rob won the NHRA Division 5 race at Bonneville Raceway in July. He qualified #1 with a 6.30/231.37 (Top Speed), then went on to set Low ET at 6.27 while beating Jim Dunn in the final. At the next Division 5 race, Rob again made it into the final, but this time he lost to Bob Pickett. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, his 6.063/239.99 qualified #7. He lost to Tripp Shumake in the first round. He failed to qualify at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. | I have him running the 5.99/242 in '80. I have 5.98 in '81 and 5.92/248 in '82. Sorry, don't have locations. - Curt Swartz | Was the 5.99 altitude factored? |

Notes: Ron began the season in the Shakey Corvette, then debuted this slick piece. He was the second alternate at Bakersfield at 6.870. Ron was at Fremont in June for its Fuel Wars event. It was an eight-car show, and his 6.71 qualified #6. He smoked the tires in the opening round and lost to Rodney Flournoy. The Miner Bros. later used the body in TA/FC. Photo from 1982. Notes: Della was a 16-second DNQ at Columbus and a 6.236/231.60 DNQ at Indy. Della had a great Keystone Nationals. She was the #15 qualifier at 6.321/222.55. Della upset Al Segrini in round one, 6.147/190.43 to a no-show. In round two, she won convincingly over DA Santucci, 6.030/209.59 to 6.377/215.31. Unfortunately, Della's dream event ended in round three when she lost fire against Kenny Bernstein. His 5.59/222 would have been tough to overcome. Della was a 6.376/208.81 DNQ at Phoenix and then finished as the third alternate at the World Finals, although she ran her first five at 5.955/243.63. |

Notes: Twig was at Beeline Dragway in January for the Phoenix Winter Classic. He qualified #9 with a 6.58/221.67. In the opening round of eliminations, he faced low qualifier, Gary Burgin. Zeigler went up in tire smoke and shut off to 13.92/59.60. At Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, his 6.338/215.82 qualified #15. A first-round 6.610/216.85 lost to Gordie Bonin's 6.352/212.76. He was at Firebird's Sixth Annual Ignitor Championships in April, but he shut off in the first round, with fuel-related problems. Traction was horrible at Seattle for its opening race of '76. Twig won his first race with a 7.69/210.77, but he lost in the next round. He was back in Seattle on May 2 for the NHRA Division 6 Opener, but it was rained out and re-run the following week. Unfortunately, Twig was unable to return for the rain date. Twig was the first alternate at NHRA Seattle in September with a 6.553/222.22. That was his last NHRA national event of the year.
