Notes: Terry attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 5.988/217.91 was good for the fifth alternate. He came back out at the NHRA World Finals and qualified #13 at 5.857/245.90. In round one, Terry beat Doug Kerhulas, 5.951/230.17 to 6.00/245, but he did not show against Gary Beck in round two. This was Terry's last year running this car. He sold everything to Larry Minor when Bernie Fedderly moved to the states to join Larry Minor racing. Terry gave young crew chief Rob Flynn his start! |

Notes: Keith attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 5.974/241.93 was good for the third alternate. Keith also raced at the NHRA Denver event. He qualified #5 at 6.143/197.36 but could not show for eliminations. That was his last NHRA national event this year. Photo from Pomona 1982. We formerly listed 5.805 for this car this year, but that did not occur on the NHRA national event trail. We are removing it until we get validation. |

Notes: Danny was way down the list of non-qualifiers at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. But he did much better at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. It helped that only 16 cars showed for the field, so there were no non-qualifiers. But still, he ripped off a 5.81/241.28 to qualify #13. That was quicker than Don Garlits, who followed him with a 5.85. Unfortunately, in the opening round, Danell slowed to 6.11/230.17 and lost to Dick Lahaie's 5.73/241. In April, he was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field and went out in round one, where his slowing 6.77 lost to Shirley Muldowney's 5.70. He then returned to Bakersfield, hoping for a repeat as he had won the race in '83. Twenty-four cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen car field, and his 5.83 qualified #5. He improved to 5.75/243 in the first round, beating Garlits' quicker-but-later 5.73/244. He improved just a little more in the second round to 5.73/245, but it was no match for eventual winner Gary Beck who ran 5.41/261 in the other lane. Near the end of May, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 5.69/243.24 qualified #6 in the eight-car show. In round one, Joe Amato's 5.65/257 defeated his 5.79/244. Columbus also suffered from a lack of TF entries for the NHRA Springnationals. Only 15 cars showed. Danny ran 5.72/240.64 to qualify #6. In the opening round, the car lost fire on the line against Bob Simmons. He made the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he ran 5.75/249.30 to qualify #6. He lost to eventual winner Beck in round one. Only 12 cars showed at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Danell qualified #7 at 5.660/250.69. In the first round, he broke a transmission and lost to Amato's tire-smoking 7.64. Amazingly, Danny's best time of the year came at the Mile High Nationals, where he qualified #2 at 5.627/247.93. He best Gene Snow in round one as both cars had issues but lost to Joe Amato in round two, 5.78/238 to 5.840/241.28. Photo from 1984 Pomona. |

Notes: Photo from Indy 84. Endres ran a career-best (to this point) 5.794 at 239.36 to qualify #11 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. In the first round of eliminations, he fell off to a 6.110/215.31 that lost to Larry Minor's 5.57/243. He would not run another 5.7 until the '85 Nationals. His next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, but he failed to qualify for the eight-car show, running 5.883/234.37 for the second alternate slot. He did not go to Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, but he was back on the NHRA tour at Columbus for the Springnationals. A 5.962/231.36 qualified #12. But he lost fire against Connie Kalitta in the first round. Shortly after that, he was at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. Only five cars showed for what was supposed to be an eight-car field. Endres ran 6.20/191.48 to qualify #4. He lost to Dick LaHaie in the opening round. Hank ran 5.982/236.84 at Sanair for the second alternate position. He ran 6.247/217.39 for the #11 slot when only 12 cars showed at Englishtown. He lost to Dick LaHaie in round one, 5.64/254 to 6.182/203.16. Hank ran 6.023/237.46 at Indy for the fifth alternate position. That was his last NHRA national event of the year. |

Notes: After a 7.85 second DNQ at the Golden Gate Nationals, Frank Taylor's Dago Red team made a splash at the OCIR World Finals. Epperly twice ran 257.14 mph to set the national speed mark. He qualified #6 at 5.668/257.14. Rocky was a tenth quicker than Gene Snow in round one, but the veteran treed him, .508 to .661, and won by nearly a car length, 5.987/232.55 to 5.889/249.30. | Photo of Gary Read in 1984. Car was sold to Dan Pastorini, who was too big to fit in the car so he sold it to Eddie Hill. |

Notes: This car was nicknamed Godzilla and the Cable Car. | Don started the season by qualifying #3 in the eight-car field at the AHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, he lost to Jeb Allen in the first round. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where his best of 6.05/243.24 was good for the third alternate. Garlits competed at Bakersfield for the March Meet, but he lost early. At the NHRA Gatornationals, his 5.94 qualified #4 and in the first round, he beat Junior Kaiser. In round two, a 6.02 beat John Kimble's 6.08, but in the semifinals, he had problems and shut off to 7.36/119.20 which lost to eventual winner Jeb Allen. He showed up at the NHRA Division 3 Opener at Indianapolis in April where his 5.98 qualified #1 for the eight-car field. He beat Wayne Ernest in round one, and in the semifinals, his 6.03/234.98 beat Jeg Coughlin's 6.15/237. This put Don into the final against Don Reed. Garlits grabbed the victory with a 6.10/227.27 when Reed had problems and shut off to a 10.95/61. The next major NHRA race was the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge on April 27. It was an eight-car show and Garlits qualified #3 with a 5.95/243.24. A 6.02/242.58 in the first round, lost to Coughlin's 5.99/235. At the NHRA Springnationals, Don's 5.96/241.93 qualified #3. He beat Junior Kaiser in the opening round and in round two, his 6.06/245 got some revenge over Coughlin's 6.20. But in the semifinals, he faced Shirley Muldowney. Don took a chance to the tree and fouled. He didn't see it and kept on the pedal, setting Low ET with a 5.932, but losing to Shirley's 6.04. Shirley got Don again at the PHR event in August, winning with a 5.962 to 5.961 holeshot victory in the final. Don’s best NHRA national event times were the 5.932/247.93 at the Springnationals. Where was the 5.75/251.39 run? |

Notes: Don started the '84 season by running a best of three match race against Shirley Muldowney at Firebird Raceway. Unfortunately, he lost three straight. Things went much better at the AHRA Winternationals. There he qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 6.01. He advanced when low qualifier Jerry Ruth blew both a rear end and a motor in the first round. In the semifinals, his 5.90/244.56 beat Dick LaHaie's 5.93/228. He won the race with a final round 5.83/211 when opponent Gene Snow got crossed up and shut off. Garlits lost a match race with Gene Snow in March at Green Valley. Snow won with a 5.80 best over Garlits' trailing 6.31. Don really came alive in the late season. He won Indy and the World Finals with Low 5.50s at 260 plus, with best times of 5.463/263.92 at Ontario. Before that, Don ran 263.92 at Eunice LA in September. |

Notes: Garlits started the '85 season at Firebird Dragway in January for its Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. He was there for a best-of-three-match race against Gary Beck. Don won all three races to win the match. His 5.61/251.39 in the second race looked pretty strong, but it was nothing compared to his final race, where he reset both ends of the track record with a 5.45 (career-best to this point) at 259.36. Then things went bad. A wing strut broke, and the dragster ended up sliding down the track on its side before finally rolling a couple of times in the mud field that adjoined that racetrack. The car was a mess, but Don only suffered a bruised elbow. He was back behind the wheel a week later at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 5.87/256.41 qualified #12. He met Beck in the opening round of eliminations, and Don's 5.53/258 beat Beck's 5.68/235. A 5.50/262.39 covered Dick LaHaie's 5.73/240 in round two, but in the semifinal, both he and his opponent, Joe Amato, blew their engines. Joe coasted across the finish line first. Three cars qualified in the 5.5's at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, and Garlits' 5.55/259.36 (Top Speed) got the #3 spot in the field. in the opening round, he ran 5.61/255.82 to beat Jack Ostrander, but in round two, he was upset by Bill Mullins. They had a great race that saw Don's 5.68/254.09 lose to Mullins' 5.67/250. Garlits won his 24th NHRA national event at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals in April. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 5.54/259.96. In the first round, he cracked 260 with a 5.62/261.93 that beat LaHaie's 5.75/249. He ran the fastest speed for a Top Fuel dragster (up until this time). Don's 5.62/265.48 buried Larry Minor's off-pace 6.32/156. He faced Amato in the final, and there was just no stopping Garlits on this day as his 5.51/258 easily beat Joe's 5.68/222. | Don ran 5.436/260.71 to qualify #1 at the Budweiser Summernationals & would win the race. | Also ran 259.36 at the 1985 Northstars. Don was a 5.56/266.27 winner at ADRA Kansas City. |
