Notes: Hill had Budget Rental Car come on board for the '84 season and had a new 18-wheeler to haul his two new Capri's. Motorcraft stayed to board as well. He was racing in both IHRA and NHRA events this season. Roy started the NHRA season by qualifying #10 with a 7.83 at Pomona for the Winternationals. His 7.85/176.81 lost to eventual winner Lee Shepherd's 7.73/178 in the first round. At the Gatornationals, 46 cars showed up to qualify for the 16 spots, and he again qualified #10 (7.75/178.57). A first-round 7.87 beat Bob Glidden's quicker 7.81, but in the second round, the Capri broke and gave opponent Butch Leal a free pass into the semifinals. Hill just made the field with a 7.87/174.75 (#16) in Atlanta on April 15 for the Southern Nationals. He fouled away a 7.96/174.08 in the first round against Ken Dondero. Baton Rouge was NHRA's next stop for the Cajun Nationals. Roy qualified #9 with a 7.80/177.16. In the first round, he faced low qualifier Warren Johnson and upset him with a 7.84/176, beating Johnson's 7.89/179. Unfortunately, his 7.89/178 lost to Glidden's 7.74/182 in the second round. His next stop was at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Nationals. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify for the eight-car field. He also failed to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. The next stop on the NHRA schedule was the Mile-High Nationals in Denver. Hill's 8.28/168.95 qualified #13 but in round one, his off-pace 8.69/146.81 fell to Butch Leal's 8.20/166. He also lost in the opening round at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Indy had 42 cars show up and attempt to qualify for the NHRA U.S. Nationals. Roy's 7.90 best failed to crack the 7.83 "bump." Shortly after that, he was at Moroso Motorsports Park for its Pro Stock Challenge race. It was an eight-car show, and Hill set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 at 7.76/178.21. In the first round, his 7.87/174.75 defeated Johnny Dowey's 7.85/173. In the semifinal, he fouled away a 7.88/175.43 against Reid Whisnant, who advanced with a 7.87. He ended his national event season as the second alternate for the NHRA World Finals with a 7.85/175.78. But at that event, he was driving his new Topaz. Formerly listed 7.550/184.61 for 1984, but that was too quick to be a legal run. Was it at match race weight and inches in 1984 or legal weight in 1985?

Notes: First backed up 500-inch National record at 7.822 at the 82 Winternationals, which he won over Lee Shepherd. Qualified #2 there, 7.87/174.41. Won Indy 82 with a 7.803 to 7.809 against Bob Glidden's EXP, after qualifying 4th at 7.790/174.75. | As mentioned, Frank started the '82 season by setting the NHRA record and winning the first 500 cubic inch NHRA race at the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 with a 7.87/174.41 behind Shepherd's 7.84. Frank picked up to his 7.82 in the first round, with a speed of 173.41 to beat Jerry Eckman's 8.06/168. In round two, his 7.84/171.75 took out Jerry Janke and a semifinal 7.86/173.41 beat Rickie Smith's 7.95/172, setting up a Shepherd vs. Iaconio final. Both had been the only cars running 7.8s in eliminations. Lee's semifinal 7.84 gave him lane choice, but he fell off to 8.02/156 in the final while Frank got the victory with a 7.83/174.08. The battle between these two moved on to the NHRA Gatornationals where Frank's 7.83/174.75 again qualified #2 behind Lee's 7.77. In the first round, both ran 7.8s with Iaconio's 7.89/173.41 beating Mark Yuill. A second-round 7.90/173.74 beat Joe Anderson and in the semifinals, his 7.90/173.07 got him into the final against Shepherd. The two Camaros had a close race, but Lee's 7.88/174 got the win over Frank's 7.89/172.74. Atlanta was the next stop on the NHRA calendar for the Southern Nationals. Of course, the two Camaro's qualified one-two, but this time Iaconio led the pack with a 7.82/174.08. But he was upset in the first round, by Bob Glidden who qualified #5 in the eight-car field. Lee went on to win the race. Both Shepherd and Iaconio took their 500 cubic inch cars to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals to test how their cars would do against the mountain motored cars. They did pretty well as once again the two Camaros met in the final. It was another close race, but Shepherd's 7.89 got the victory over Iaconio's 7.92. By this time, Frank must have been getting sick of a certain white Camaro from Texas, but he kept on running into it in the finals. It happened again at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Frank's 7.88 qualified #2 behind you-know-who's Camaro at 7.81. An 8.04 in round one, beat Jim Meyer's surprising Mopar while a 7.94/173 beat Warren Johnson's Starfire in the semifinals. Lee and Frank lined up and once again Lee grabbed the victory with a 7.90/173 over Frank's 7.93/173. Things went a little different as Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, Frank's best of 7.84/173.74 in qualifying slipped to the #3 spot in the field. This was due to Glidden slipping his little EXP into second behind Shepherd in the qualifying order. What this ended up doing was setting up a Shepherd vs. Iaconio match in the semifinals rather than the final. Lee caught a great light and his 7.96/173 held on to win over Frank's quicker 7.93/172.41. At least Glidden stopped Shepherd in the final, which was good for Iaconio as far as the points went. He grabbed a win at the Super Stock Magazine Nationals at Maple Grove near the end of June. He beat Don Campanello and Bob Ingles to reach the finals with times of 7.96/170.77 and 7.94/171.10. In the final, he faced Andy Mannarino and his 8.02/171.10 took home the trophy over Andy's 8.12/170. He then followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals early in July. He qualified #3 and lasted until the semifinals before losing to Shepherd. He slipped to the #5 (7.93) spot in qualifying at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. An opening round 7.95 beat Dave Hutchens' 8.01, but he lined up against Shepherd in round two and he attempted to gain an advantage on the 'tree and fouled. After that, Frank was at Atco for a mid-week Pro Stock race. He was performing really well, running 7.75 twice and a 7.77 at 178. Unfortunately, he lost to Warren Johnson in the final. Frank then won Indy, over a great field of cars. His best times came at the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals at Fremont, where he ran 7.747 at 176.12.

Notes: Qualified 5th at Indy 82 at 7.880/173.74. Bob qualified #11 at the Gatornationals with a 7.99/171.42. A first-round 8.08/168.85 lost to Pat Musi's 8.01/172. Early in April, Maple Grove held its Spring All-Pro Pro Stock Championships. Ingles' 8.07 qualified #3 in the eight-car field, and he improved to 7.99/171.42 in the first round to beat Carl Hobson's 8.34/163. He left on the money in his semifinal race against Frank Iaconio, and his 8.04/172.41 held on to win over Frank's hard-charging 7.90/173. He faced Pat Musi in the final, and as the saying goes, "you live by the sword, you die by the sword," as Musi's 8.05/171 beat his quicker 8.01/171 for the victory. The NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta was rain postponed until May, and Ingles qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car show with an 8.01/171.10. He lost to Warren Johnson in the opening round. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, an 8.10 qualified #8 in yet another eight-car show, and he lost to Johnson in the first round again. In June, he was at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. A 7.95/169.49 qualified #7. He failed to make the finals. He made it into the semifinals at Maple Grove on June 27 for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. He ran 7.93/170.77 to qualify #3 in the eight-car field. A first-round 8.08/169.17 beat Carl Hobson, but in the semis, Iaconio's 7.94 took out his 8.04. Early in July, he was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. It was another eight-car field, and Ingles' 7.92/171.42 qualified #5, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Lee Shepherd. His 7.96/170.45 lost to the Texas Camaro's 7.81/176. Ingles out-qualified many "name" drivers at the NHRA Summernationals in July. He ran a 7.87 to qualify #3. He lasted until the semifinals before losing to Shepherd's 7.84 with a 7.96. He was strong again at the PHR Championships at US 131. A 7.80/172.08 qualified #2 in the eight-car field. He beat Don Coonce's 7.96/169 in the first round, with a 7.88/172.41. A 7.93/169.17 lost in the semifinals to Iaconio's 7.91/172. The streak continued at the NHRA Northstar Nationals when he qualified in the top half of the eight-car field. A 7.92/174.75 qualified #4. He lost to a holeshot 8.12 by Brian Stewart in the first round, which beat his 8.10. He qualified #5 at Indy for the US Nationals with a 7.88/173.74 but lost to Coonce in the first round. Englishtown held an eight-car show, and Bob qualified #4 with an 8.00/173.41. He failed to reach the finals, but his speed held up as tops for the meet. Another good run came at Fremont for NHRA's Golden Gate Nationals. Ingles qualified #6 with a 7.792, but he faced Johnson in the opening round and fouled away a 7.88/173.07. He had to take the chance as Johnson won with a 7.77/176. Bob's best times of the year were the 7.792 at Fremont and 174.75 at Brainerd. Bob finished #6 in the championship points. | The '82 Don Ness Camaro was the best car I ever owned. - Bob Ingles, Draglist LIVE, 3/27/23

Notes: Low qualifier at Indy 82 at 7.762/179.28. | Johnson failed to qualify at the Gatornationals. That performance would soon change as the little Starfire was one of the most feared cars by the end of the '82 season. At the Southern Nationals in Atlanta, he made the show and lasted until the semifinals before fouling against Lee Shepherd. He won the second Division 2 race, winning with a holeshot 7.95/166.66 over Wyman Barnett's Arrow at 7.91/168. He qualified for the Cajun Nationals with a 7.93 which was good for the #4 spot in the field. Once again he lasted until the semifinal before losing to Frank Iaconio. At Columbus for the Springnationals, a 7.87/174.75 qualified #4. He beat Alban Gauthier in the first round, and an 8.02/171.10 beat Dave Hutchens in round two. But in the semifinals, he fouled away a 7.96 that lost to Bob Glidden's 8.01. He raced at the Super Stock Nationals at Maple Grove in June, but lost to Andy Mannarino in the first round. Warren made his first NHRA final of the year at the Grandnationals on July 4 in Canada. He beat Glidden's 7.85 in the semifinal with a 7.84, but a final run of 7.88/175 was only good for the runner-up position to Shepherd's 7.74/178. He broke through for a win at the next event. The Summernationals at Englishtown. He qualified #4 with a 7.91/175.09. A first-round 7.87 beat Sam Gianino. In round two he beat Don Campanello, and a 7.91 in the semifinal advanced when Joe Lepone fouled. In the final, WJ took a satisfying victory over Shepherd with a 7.90/174.41 beating Lee's close 7.91/173. This was Warren's first NHRA national event win. At the PHR Championships at US 131 Martin, Mich., a 7.85/173.07 qualified #5 in the eight-car show, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Shepherd. In that first-round race, Lee's 7.83/174 beat Johnson's 7.87/173.41. During this time, WJ was tearing up the troops on the IHRA Pro Stock tour as well. At the next NHRA event, the Northstar Nationals in Aug, Warren qualified #3 in the eight-car show with a 7.89/174.75. A first-round 7.93/173.07 advanced over a fouling John Lingenfelter. But once again he lost in the semifinals. At the US Nationals, his 7.762 (Low ET) at a new NHRA speed record of 179.28 qualified #1. Unfortunately, he lost to Butch Leal in the first round. He grabbed another win on October 3 at Fremont for the Golden Gate Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 7.660 and also ran 181.08, becoming the first NHRA Pro Stock to run 180. Once again he met and beat Shepherd in the final; this time his 7.69/179.28 beat Lee's 7.74/179. He wrapped up the NHRA season by setting Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.73, setting Top Speed at 178.92, and winning the World Finals at OCIR with a final round 7.78/176 over the Texas Camaro's (you know who) 7.86/177. Even though the NHRA season had ended he still grabbed off more wins such as the Turkey Trot National Open at Orlando Florida in November. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 7.89/178.57. He was the only pro stocker in the sevens at the event. A first-round 8.03/176.47 beat Billy Ewing and a semifinal 7.92/177.86 beat Reid Whisnant. In the final, he beat a fouling Harry Del Prete. He also won the Snowbird National Open at DeSoto. A 7.84/175.43 (Top Speed) qualified #1. A first-round 7.83 beat Ewing and another 7.83 beat Whisnant's 8.12. In the final, he set Low ET with a 7.79/175.78 over a fouling Bubba Corzine at 7.96/172.

Notes: Warren did not compete at the NHRA Winternationals. The reason for this was that NHRA did not approve his cylinder heads. He was at Moroso Motorsports Park for the NHRA Division Two race held shortly after. This is where he debuted his new Cutlass and showed up with a new 18-wheeler to haul it in. It was an eight-car show, and WJ qualified #2 with a 7.91/174.41. He won his opening race over Russell Jung with a 7.85/175.09 (Low ET and Top Speed). Unfortunately, in the semifinal, his late 7.91/174.41 lost to Wayne Ellison's 8.04/171. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #3 with a 7.71/178.57. He slept on the line in the first round, and his 7.73/177 lost to Carlton Phillips' 7.77/176. I believe he was still running the 500 cubic inch engine at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. His 7.77/177.86 qualified second to Lee Shepherd's 7.71/178.A 7.87/172.08 beat Phillips 8.03/174 in the opening round. He reached the final, where he ran Shepherd. The two had a good race, but Lee's 7.69/181 got the better of WJ's 7.72/180.36. He then went to Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was only an eight-car field, and his 7.84/174.75 qualified #4. In the first round, he faced Phillips again, and WJ's 7.87/172.74 beat Carlton's 8.04/172. But in the semifinals, eventual winner Shepherd's 7.82/175 beat his 7.86/174.08. He had an interesting day at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. He actually got beat twice. He lost to Shepherd in the semifinal, but Lee forgot to weigh in after the race, and WJ was reinstated. He went up against Rickie Smith in the final, losing for the second time.WJ then went to Baton Rouge at the end of May for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. His 7.69 (Low ET) at 177.86 qualified #1. In the opening round, his 7.75/177.16 beat Joe Lepone's 7.92/174. In the semifinal, the pesky Camaro from Texas beat him, Lee's 7.82/177 beat WJ's late 7.77/177.86. He then went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He always ran well at Bristol, and '83 was no exception. His 7.86/178 qualified #3. His best run came in round two, where a 7.83/181.45 beat Roy Hill's Capri. But once again, he lost to Shepherd in the semifinal. WJ won the World Finals at OCIR, his first in exactly one year. WJ qualified his Hurst Olds third with a 7.658 and, in eliminations, ran 7.68, 7.70, 7.71, and 7.69, defeating Rickie Smith, Jerry Eckman, Bob Glidden, and Lee Shepherd (on a holeshot to Shepherd's 7.68). Warren's best NHRA speed was 181.08 at Indy.

Notes: Warren qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 7.65/180.50. He beat Joe Lepone in the first round, with a 7.70/180.94 while a second round 7.69/179.49 beat Rickie Smith's T-Bird. In the semifinals, Butch Leal fouled away a 7.72/180 while Johnson moved into the final with a 7.73/179.28. There he met up with Bob Glidden. Bob was on a roll here, resetting the NHRA ET record no less than three times during the event as well as setting a new speed record so the final was no surprise when Glidden got the victory with a 7.58/184 over WJ's 7.77/179.21. At the NHRA Gatornationals, WJ qualified #2 with a 7.63/183.00 just behind Glidden's 7.61/183. These two would once again work their way to the final. WJ ran 7.55 in all three of his rounds over Ken Dondero, a fouling Nick Nikolis over Gordie Rivera in the semifinal. His best speed was 184.35 in the semis. This time going into the final it was WJ who had the edge. Glidden had run 7.55 and 7.57 in the last two rounds so it would still be close. WJ got the victory with his slowest run of eliminations, a 7.60/183.82 that was still enough to cover Bob's 7.68/170. The battle between these two continued at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. There WJ set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.65 at 181.08. A first-round 7.73/181.07 beat Gene Fasching, but in round two he came up against Glidden who qualified poorly (#13). Bob beat him with a 7.72/179 to WJ's 7.79/179.14. Glidden went to the final only to lose to Butch Leal. Next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was to be another WJ vs Glidden final. Warren qualified #2 with a 7.54/184.19, not behind Glidden, but behind Bruce Allen in the Reher-Morrison Camaro also at 7.54. Bob was third with a 7.58. WJ ran a first-round 7.63/181.81 to beat Don Coonce and in round two his 7.68/178.64 advanced when Jerry Eckman fouled. In the semifinals, his 7.62/181.52 sent Dondero packing. Bob had run 7.68/182 in his semifinal win so it would still be close. WJ picked up his second NHRA victory of the year with a 7.61/178.64 beating Glidden's 7.67/183. He didn't have to wait long for his third as it came at the next NHRA race, the Springnationals. There WJ qualified #3 with a 7.64 with a track record speed of 181.52. A first-round 7.70/179.78 beat Sam Gianino while in round two Rivera fouled against him and WJ moved on with a 7.64/180.65. In the semifinals, his 7.66/180 stopped Leal's 7.74/178. In the final he was up against Allen. Bruce had problems and WJ took his twelfth NHRA National event title with a 7.68/180.44. Where was Glidden? He lost to Leal in round two. Warren made a stop at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals where he dominated the race. He set track records of 7.61 and 180.72 in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field. Another 7.61 in the first round, beat Charlie Garrett and in the semifinals his 7.65/180.00 took out Dondero's 7.79/177. In the final he met Ronnie Manchester. Ronnie tried hard, but his 7.85/172 finished second best to WJ's 7.64/180.00. But then, just like that, the magic stopped. He would not win another NHRA National event in '85, and he would make only one more final round. Warren went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals where he qualified #2 with a 7.53/185.26 (Top Speed), but his first-round 7.62/180.36 lost to a quick-leaving Don Campanello who beat him with a 7.68/180. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, he qualified #2 again with a 7.55/183.29. He lasted until the second round. Warren was #2 in qualifying again at the NHRA Mile High Nationals with an 8.00/172.41. He won his first two rounds with runs of 8.04/172.08 and 8.01/172.08 over Fasching and Frank Iaconio. In the semifinals, he became the only other Pro Stock driver to run in the seven's besides Glidden here when he ran 7.99/172.74. Unfortunately, Bob was in the other lane running 7.96/173 to win. He also made it into the semifinals at the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified #3 with a 7.67/180.72, and he beat Dempsey hardy in round one, with a 7.59/182.55. In the second round, Stan Mizell fouled and WJ advanced with a 7.68/182.55. Once again he faced Glidden in the semifinals and once again Glidden came out on top with a 7.57/183 to Warren's 7.60/183.67. At Indy, he was in the Pro Stock Challenge race. A race for the top qualifiers in all NHRA National events for the past twelve months. It was an eight-car field and WJ's 7.60/185.03 in the first round, advanced when Rivera fouled. In the semifinals, WJ fouled away a 7.66/180.14 against Leal who won with a 7.67/180. For the actual NHRA US Nationals, a 7.60/184.04 qualified #3. In the first round his 7.63/184.19 beat Fasching. In the second round, Rivera's 7.80/176 lost to his 7.60/182.11, but a strong 7.61/182.40 lost to Glidden's holeshot 7.66/181. As you can see, even though he was not winning, he was still running strong. The next stop was at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. A 7.52/183.59 qualified #2 behind Glidden's record-setting 7.49. He beat Dondero in the first round, by a tenth,7.57/183.15 to 7.67/179. In round two he carried over the same performance advantage over Iaconio with a 7.58/182.77 beating Frank's 7.68/180. It got closer in the semifinals where WJ's 7.61/182.33 beat Tony Christian's 7.65/180. This put Warren into the final against Allen. Bruce was sharp on the light and his 7.59/179 got the victory over WJ's quicker 7.57/182.70.

Notes: Jung was at Moroso Motorsports Park early in the year for an eight-car show. He qualified #6 with an 8.17/170.45. He lost to Warren Johnson in the first round. Shortly after that, he went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, but he failed to qualify. He also failed to qualify at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where he was the fifth alternate at 8.21/166.35. Russell was the sixth alternate at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with a 7.94/176.47. Won the Bradenton Snowbird race in November 1983 with only one year of pro stock racing under his belt (defeated Don Cox, 7.98/173.41 to 8.0).

Notes: Qualified #6 at first 500 inch Pro Stock race at the 1982 NHRA Winternationals, 8.033/172.08. Qualified 9th at Indy 82 at 7.919/173.07. | Mopar lovers couldn't wait for the '82 season to begin. It had been over ten years since the Hemi had dominated the Pro Stock ranks before it had been all but outlawed with a pencil. The rules hung more and more weight on the Hemi-powered cars until they became non-competitive. Now the rules were 500 cubic inches, 2350 lbs, gas, and carburetors. How could they lose? The problem was, in the last ten years, development work went on with the big block Chevy in Pro Stock. Even the Boss 429 Fords had a couple of years of development in the big cubic inch IHRA Pro Stock wars while little was done for the 426 Hemi in Pro Stock racing. The Hemi racers now had to catch up fast. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, four Mopars qualified for the field. Butch's was the second quickest of the bunch, running 8.03/172.08 to qualify #6 overall in the show. Unfortunately, another 8.03/170.45 lost to a quick-leaving Jerry Janke, who won with an 8.15/166. At the NHRA Gatornationals, only one Mopar qualified, and it was not Leal's as Butch failed to qualify. Ran 7.888 at NHRA Fremont for his best ET and 174.08 at NHRA Orange County Finals for his best speed.

Notes: After running a Ford in '64, Butch Leal switched to Mopars from '65-'69 before briefly running a Pro Stock Mustang for Mickey Thompson. After that, it didn't pan out. He raced a Camaro Pro Stock for the rest of '70 and into '71. While the car did record the first west coast "nine's" from a Chevy, it was still not competitive with the Mopars, so he had a new state-of-the-art Duster built for '71. If it wasn't for Bill Jenkins's dominance that season, Leal's Duster would have been the car to beat at any race. Leal stayed will the Mopar camp until the end of '82, when he signed on with the Rod Shop team to build their new Firebird Pro Stock. The car debuted at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals using Chevy power. He qualified #11 with a 7.94/176.81, but he lost to Roy Hill in the opening round. Leal attempted to qualify at Gainesville for the Gatornationals, but a best of 7.89/171.42 just missed the 7.88 bump. At the NHRA Springnationals, Leal showed up with a new Bob Ingles-built engine. He qualified #8 with a 7.91/174.08, and in the first round, he beat John Brumley with a 7.93/173.74. In the second round, Alan Marsh fouled, and Butch's 7.98/163.93 advanced. In the semifinals, a 7.92/173.74 lost to Bob Glidden's 7.85/177. As the year went on, Leal's times kept improving, and by the NHRA Summernationals in July, he was regularly qualifying in the top half of the field. At Englishtown, a 7.88/173.41 qualified #7. He beat Reid Whisnant and Glidden in the first two rounds before losing to Frank Iaconio's 7.80 in the semifinal with an 8.02. He didn't race at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. At the US Nationals, he qualified #10 with a 7.86/174.41, but his 7.91/173.41 lost to Lee Shepherd's 7.72/177 in the first round. The times really improved by October for the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals. Leal qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 7.72/177.16. Unfortunately, being number five in an eight-car show meant that he had to run the low qualifier in the first round. In this case, it was Iaconio who ran a 7.70/177 to put Leal's 7.80/177.16 on the trailer. At the season-ending NHRA World Finals, another 7.72/178.18 qualified #6. A first-round 7.77/176.12 beat Fred Taylor's 7.88, but a second-round 7.81/175.78 lost to Shepherd's 7.68/177. Still, he just cracked the top ten in the season-long NHRA points chase.

Notes: Butch opened some eyes at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals when he qualified #1 with a 7.684 (Low ET) at 177.86. He beat Ken Dondero in the first round with a 7.71/174.75, but he lost to Frank Iaconio in the second round where his tire-shaking, shut off 9.15/104.52 fell to Frank's 7.92/168. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 7.69/180.36 qualified #6. He beat John Brumley with a 7.75/178.92 and a 7.84/177.86 advanced past Roy Hill's broken Capri in round two. He had a close race in the semifinals with the meet's eventual winner Warren Johnson. Leal's 7.75/175.08 lost to WJ's 7.74/172. The next NHRA race was at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. There, a 7.76/178.57 qualified #4. Butch beat Jerry Eckman in the first round before losing to Dondero in round two. He qualified #4 again at the NHRA Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge with a 7.70/179.28. This time he made it all the way to the final. His 7.79/179 advanced when Don Campanello fouled in the opening round. Leal's 7.81/177 beat "Dyno Don" Nicholson's ailing Olds in round two. A 7.86/178 stopped Iaconio in the semifinal. He went against the Texas Camaro of Lee Shepherd in the final, and he gambled on the 'tree and lost, fouling away a 7.81/177.86 while Lee got the victory with a 7.75/181. The NHRA Springnationals was not very good for the Nationwise team; Leal lost in the first round. Another early loss came at the NHRA Grandnationals. Leal qualified well with a 7.75/177.86 (#6), but he failed even to reach the semifinals. That continued at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, a good 7.73 qualified #7, but he lost to Sam Carroll in the first round. After qualifying #5 with an 8.16/168.53 at the NHRA Mie High Nationals, he beat Roy Hill in round one with an 8.20/166.97. But in round two, he lost to the eventual winner, Warren Johnson. Butch ran a decent 8.17/165.13, but WJ's 8.09/170 had him covered. Brainerd saw more of the same; he qualified #6 but lost to Shepherd in round two. At Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals, he ran an excellent 7.69/179.64 to qualify #3, but a 7.84/175.09 in the first round, lost to Dondero's 7.79/181. Things changed for the team at the season-ending NHRA World Finals at Pomona. More people would have noticed Leal if it weren't for Bob Glidden's dominating performance. He qualified #2 with a 7.69/179.64 and shut off to an 8.01/149.25 win in round one when Ronnie Manchester fouled. A 7.76/178.92 in round two beat Reid Whisnant's Mopar, while in the semifinals, a 7.74/180.00 advanced when Don Coonce fouled against him. This put Leal in the final against Glidden. But it was Glidden's day, and Butch's 7.81/162.45 finished runner-up to Bob's 7.61/181. Bob Riffle was the co-crew chief, and Dale Eicke did cylinder head and intake manifold development.

Notes: On April 21, 1985, Butch Leal became the first racer other than Bob Glidden, Warren Johnson, Lee Shepherd, or Frank Iaconio to win an NHRA Pro Stock national event since 1979. Leal's Castrol GTX Nationwise Pontiac Trans Am beat Glidden's 7/11 Chief Auto Parts Ford Thunderbird in the final round of the NHRA Southern Nationals in Atlanta, GA, 7.73/179.71 to 7.80/167.72. This was the first Pro Stock win for Pontiac in NHRA history. Runner-up to Bruce Allen at 1985 NHRA Mr. Gasket Pro Stock Challenge at Indy. | Butch had a very successful season in '85. He started the year at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #6 with a 7.67/179.35. Leal improved to a 7.63/180.65 in the first round, to beat Don Nicholson, while in round two, a 7.69/178.71 beat Lee Shepherd's quicker 7.66/179. He pushed the tree a little too hard in the semifinals and fouled away a 7.72/180.07 in a loss to Warren Johnson's 7.73/179. He qualified #3 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 7.64/180.36. A 7.63/178.07 beat Rickie Smith in round one, but he lost to Dempsey Hardy in round two. Then came the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta. As mentioned above, he got Pontiac its first win in the Pro Stock category. He qualified #2 with a 7.67/181.45 (Top Speed) and then beat Smith, Ken Dondero, and Dave Hutchens. All fouled against him. He then met Glidden in the final to take his first NHRA Pro Stock title since 1973. The next NHRA event was the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. Leal's 7.63/185.10 (Top Speed) qualified #4 in the field. Unfortunately, he fouled against Tony Christian in the first round. It was then on to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where Leal qualified #5 with a 7.67/180.94. He beat Hardy in the first round, with a 7.75/178.35 and then got a good light that saw his 7.73/178.92 take out low qualifier Glidden's 7.72/179. This put him into the semifinals, where his 7.74/178.42 lost to johnson's 7.66/180. He then followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. There he qualified #6 with a 7.60/183.00. In the opening round, Leal's 7.66/181.81 took out Sam Gianino's 7.80/175. Another 7.66 at 181.30 in round two beat Gordie Rivera's 7.76/179, and yet a third 7.66/181.81 beat Glidden's quicker and faster 7.62/182 in the semifinals. This put him into the final against low qualifier Bruce Allen. Butch improved to 7.62/182.70 in their race, but he finished runner-up to Allen's 7.55/183. The next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Once again, he qualified #6, this time with a 7.62/180. He beat Gianino and Johnson in the first two rounds, and in the semifinal, Rivera broke on the line, and Leal's 7.69/178 advanced. It was a rematch of the Grandnats final with Allen that had the same results. Allen's 7.61/180 got the victory over Butch's 7.70/180.28. At the end of July, he was at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. An 8.02/171.75 qualified #4 and an 8.10/171.10 in the first round, beat Pete Smith. Dempsey Hardy fouled against him in round two, and Butch ran 8.04/171.75 to advance. He showed his driving skills in the semifinals, where he beat Johnson's 7.99/172 with his best run of the weekend, an 8.01/172.74. Leal was in another final round, but this time he faced the Ford of low qualifier Glidden. Bob had been running mid 7.9s all day, so Leal needed to get the jump. But it didn't happen; his 8.05/172.74 lost to Glidden's 7.95/172. It was Butch's third straight runner-up finish. At the NHRA Northstar Nationals, Leal's 7.71/182.18 qualified #5. An opening round 7.64/182.55 beat Gianino's 7.83/174, but he fouled away a 7.76 in round two against Glidden. He had to take the chance as Bob ran 7.60.

Notes: Lepone qualified #4 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 7.90/172.41. An opening round 8.03/168.66 beat Harold Denton, but he lost soon after. At the rain postponed NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta, a 7.98/168.85 qualified #7 in the eight-car field. He failed to reach the finals. The next stop for the Jenkins team was at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was another eight-car show, and his 7.96 qualified #5, which set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Lee Shepherd. He lost that race. At the NHRA Springnationals, the Camaro's performance was off. An 8.02/168.85 qualified #14 and an off pace 8.13 in the opening round lost to Don Coonce's 8.10. The team then went to Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. Joe qualified #4 in the eight-car show with a 7.96/170.45. In the first round, his 8.06/167.91 beat Joe Anderson, but he slept on the line in the semifinals, and his 8.04 lost to Andy Mannarino's 8.08. Joe qualified 14th at Indy 82 at 7.953/173.41. | The team finished 5th in NHRA points in 1982. | The way Lepone ran up the R's a second before taking off at the '82 Finals was cool. - Joe Moore

Notes: Judy qualified #3 at the AHRA Winternationals with an 8.15. A first-round 8.38 beat Jim Basko, but a sleepy 8.32/167 in the semifinals lost to Eddie Carmichael's 8.47/163. She also attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but her 8.012/169.49 was the seventh alternate in a field with a 7.91 "bump." Judy qualified on the bump at the Mile High Nationals with an 8.457/163.33. She lost to Rich Marino in round one, 8.27/166 to 7.497/161.57. Those were her only two NHRA national events this year. We need to determine where the 7.89/174 times occurred. Former Dick Landy car.

Notes: Rich did not run at the Pomona Winters. Came out with the Calais at Gainesville. Unfortunately, his 7.980/173.10 best failed to top the 7.76 "bump" for the NHRA Gatornationals field (12th alternate). Rich qualified #4 at Bakersfield in the first week of May with a 7.98/171.42. He broke a rod in the first round, but his 8.21/157 still beat Clarence Thomas' 8.72/161. He was unable to return for his semi-final race against Jerry Eckman. He ran best times of 7.889/175.02 at Columbus (11th alternate), but he showed up in the Ron Cosner car at Englishtown. We are listing all later NHRA national events for 1985 in that car.
