Notes: Brad was well overdue for an NHRA national event victory when he pulled into Pomona for the Winternationals in February. He qualified #2 with a 6.64/211.76, then ran 6.67/207.85 and 6.71/209.30 in beating Tom Lemon and Don Holm in the first two rounds. In the semifinals, he set Top Speed with a 6.75/212.26 to beat Jack Holsey's 6.85/206. He faced Chuck Beal in the final, and both had trouble getting traction, but Brad's 7.20/207.85 scored him his first NHRA title over Chuck's 7.39/203. It was the first of many. He was at Fremont in April for the NHRA Division 6 Opener. A 6.61/213.27 (Top Speed) qualified #3 in the eight-car field. Unfortunately, he got derailed in the first round, where his 6.85/209.30 lost to Jimmy Scott's 6.75/208. Set both ends of the world record at the Golden Gate Nationals. Amazing speed display made Brad a participant in the FOUR fastest side by side TAFC passes in history at the World Finals (213.77 against Jon Barrett's 206.42/213.77 against Steve Chrisman's 207.37/213.27 against Chuck Beal's 208.33, and 213.77 against Gary Southern's 209.79). Notes: Cambra was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He ran 6.60 and 6.62 in qualifying. Either run would have been good enough for the pole. He lasted until the semifinals, where his 6.90/204.08 lost to Chuck Beal's 6.84/205. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 6.58/205.94 qualified #3 but troubled 17.73/51.63 in the first round, lost to Lee Zeinert. He qualified #1 again for the NHRA Southern Nationals. His 6.64 got him the spot in the eight-car field. Cambra lasted until the semifinals, where his 6.83/203 lost to Jerry Gwynn's 6.74/204. George was at Indianapolis for the NHRA Division 3 Opener on May 3. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 6.72/209.30. In the first round, he faced Bob Elliott, and his 6.77/208 was wasted when he crossed the centerline on the run, and Bob advanced with a 7.63/184. |

Notes: This car was a Bad Hombre, way ahead of its time. We were always trying something new every time it went to the starting line. - Denny Savage | Best times of 6.09/239 cited in ad to sell the car. 1978 IHRA Champion. - Danny White | Savage started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 6.277/209.79 qualified #6. In the opening round of competition, his 6.39/214 beat John Collins' 6.55/217. But in round two, an off-pace 6.62/230 lost to Tommy Ivo's 6.48/226. The team then went to Beeline Dragway for the Phoenix Winter Championships. There Denny's 6.57/230.17 qualified #8. He beat Jim Adolph in the first round, with a 6.54/233.76. In round two, his opponent, Gene Modlin, broke on the line and the "Powers-Steel" car advanced with a 6.79/231.95. In the semifinals, he faced Don Prudhomme, and both smoked the tires. The "Snake" recovered first, and his 6.86/213 beat Denny's 7.75/134.00 to the stripe. Gainesville was their next stop for the NHRA Gatornationals. The team continued to qualify well, with a 6.38/216.34 getting the #8 spot in the field. But a troubled 7.55/134.73 in the first round, lost to Shirl Greer's 6.35/230. Traction wasn't the best at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. Savage's 7.16/196.50 qualified #2 behind Dale Pulde's 6.88/221. In round one, he improved a lot, where his 6.65/202 beat Pete Williams' 6.89/213 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Frank Oglesby got off the line a little quicker in the semifinals, and his 6.60/218 hung on to win over Denny's 6.59/218. At the Bakersfield March Meet, a great 6.09/212.26 qualified #3 in the sixteen-car show. Dennis Geisler broke on the line in the first round, and Savage ran 6.17/215.31 to advance. In round two, a 6.18/217.91 beat Bob Pickett's slightly quicker 6.16/230. He got another solo in the semifinals when Dave Condit, driving the "L. A. Hooker," had the car lock up in gear. A 6.22/230.76 advanced to the final. His final-round opponent was Tripp Shumake, driving Johnny Loper's Arrow. The two had a good race, but the Camaro had a bit more in it than the Arrow, and Savage's 6.21/214.79 got the win over Tripp's hard-charging 6.30/226. From hero to zero. The following week (April 2), Denny failed to qualify for the eight-car field at the NHRA Division Seven race at Fremont. What's more surprising was that it only took a 6.59 to make the field. The roller-coaster ride continued at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. There he qualified #2 with a 6.36/204. A 6.75/201 beat Greer's troubled 13.05 in round one. In round two, Les Cassidy also had problems against him, and Savage advanced with a 6.49/216. Even his semifinal opponent, Williams, could not get in a good run against him, and Denny ran 6.56/225 to meet low-qualifier, Pulde in the final. When it's your day, it's your day as Pulde broke, and Savage got the victory with a 7.12/223. On May 21, the IHRA held its Dixie Nationals at Atlanta. Savage qualified poorly, down in the #9 spot. This set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Pulde. Crew Chief Dan Geare must have set the car on "kill" as Savage cracked off a 6.26 to beat Dale's 6.35. Denny set Low ET in round two with a 6.24 that sent Greer packing. He had a good race with Dave Settles in the "Mr. Norm" car in the semifinals. Savage's 6.34 came out on top over Settle's 6.37. He faced the "Chi-Town" bunch in the final. Savage had the edge in terms of their ET's in competition. But Williams pulled out a squeaker, running 6.45/215 to get the win over Denny's 6.47/226.13. Savage was also credited with Top Speed at 228.42. Savage was in Milan in July for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.50 but improved to 6.11/229.5 (Low ET and Top Speed) in the opening round over Pete Williams, who had shut the "Chi-Town Hustler" off on the line. Another 6.11 at 217.91 beat Roger Lindamood in the semifinals, and he went up against Tom Anderson in the final. Anderson was no slouch as he had won his semifinal race with a 6.12. But in the final, Tom had a wheelie bar break and went into a huge wheelstand while Savage ran a motor-blowing, on fire, 7.28/134.94 for the victory. Best NHRA ET of 6.120 236 at the Summernationals, which Denny won over Ed McCulloch. | We need to confirm the 6.02 from OCIR. |

Notes: The is the former Color Me Gone Dodge purchased by Mr. Norm after Dick Branstner lost his factory program in June 1965. This car was dipped at Aero-Chem in late 1964 and ran as a 2% A/FX at Pomona before being converted to full AWB trim at Branstner's shop. Entitled S/FX-II, O'Conner drove it in injected form that summer as shown, notably at the 1965 Super Stock Nationals. Later that year, Norm and Gary Dyer swapped the supercharged driveline out of homebuilt S/FX-I into this body and Dyer drove it to an 8.70 at Ubly in late September and an unreal 8.63 at Lions in October. O'Connor flipped a car per 10/23/65 Drag News and built a Chevy II as a replacement. This was in all estimates the earlier maroon SFX-1 Coronet that Dyer and Krause had built for the start of the year so that Norm would not be racing his own Super Stock customers. A note in Drag World (9/17/65 p. 17) states the drivelines were swapped between the two vehicles. Dyer went 8.98 at Rockford in the car shown the following weekend (DW 9/24/65 p. 3). Its current disposition has not been verified. |

Notes: Mert had a bad weekend at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. During qualifying, the car got out of shape, and Mert ended up hitting the guardrail at 150 mph. He was ok; the same could not be said for the car. He was listed as the sixth alternate, but we don't have the times. The team came back with a Ford Tempo later in the year. |
