Notes: At the Division 4 Opener on March 9 at Baton Rouge, Kelly was runner-up to Gary Beck, clocking a 6.05/222.22 in the final to Beck's 5.93/237. A week later, the team was at Gainesville for the Gatornationals. It was a rough weekend for the team as they blew two engines and a supercharger in qualifying. Finally, a 5.900/233.76 landed them in the #3 spot. Unfortunately, Brown lost to Richard Tharp in the opening round with a 10-second shutoff. Another early loss came at the second Division 4 race at Green Valley, where he qualified #5 with a 6.77 but lost in the first round. Kelly qualified #13 at Ontario World Finals at 6.015/238.09. In round one, he lost on a holeshot to Connie Kalitta, 6.159/229.59 6.140/218.97. Photo from 1980 Green Valley WWCS. Dave Settles ran ACI chassis. Foster Yancey & Brad Camp also had an A/FD. Beadle owned it, Yancey & Camp funded it. - Dave Settles, Racin & Rockin Radio show, 7/01/13 |

Notes: The "Candies and Hughes" team would never have suspected their car to not qualify in its debut at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. On every qualifying attempt, the car smoked the tires. Oswald's best was only 7.33/126.93 (seventh alternate). Early in March, the team went to Atlanta for an eight-car show. Mark's 6.00/250.69 (Top Speed) qualified second behind Al Segrini's 5.95/237. Oswald beat Johnny White in the first round with a 6.09/246.57. In the semifinal, his 6.03/250.00 beat Rick Johnson in the "Custom Body" car. He faced Segrini in the final, and Oswald's car died on the line giving Al a solo pass for the win. Things really turned around at Gainesville, where Mark qualified #1 with a 5.87/254.23 (Top Speed and a new track record). Unfortunately, the car went up in smoke in the opening round, and he lost to Frank Hawley driving the "Chi-Town Hustler." At Atlanta, Mark's 5.93/245.23 (Top Speed) qualified second to John Lombardo's similar 5.93/232. Oswald faced Hawley in the first round, and he fouled, giving the "Chi-Town" bunch an easy win. The team's first IHRA event of the season was the Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham. It was another eight-car field, and Mark's 6.02 qualified #3. He lasted until the semifinal. He then went to Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals, where the team got its first win of the year by defeating Raymond Beadle, who was driving the "Blue Max" in the final. The following week (May 29), Mark took the pole at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals with a 5.90 (Low ET) at 243.24. By now, the team was becoming the car to watch. Billy Meyer overpowered the track in the opening round and smoked the tires against him, and Mark's 6.21/229.59 advanced. Don Prudhomme did the same in the semifinal, and Mark ran 6.02/249.99 (Top Speed). He faced Segrini in the final, and both ran 6.17 (Oswald at 241.28), but Al crossed the stripe first for the win. Oswald wasn't down for long as he then went to Bristol on June 5 and won the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #1 with a 5.92 and then beat a tire-smoking Tom McEwen in the first round with a 6.13/240.00. In the semifinal, he set Top Speed with a 6.52/248.61 that beat Beadle. He faced Prudhomme in the final, and Mark cut a great light while the "Snake" didn't. Oswald's 6.00/236 beat Don's better 5.86/245. The team "only" qualified #8 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.02/247.93 (Top Speed). But Mark had a bit of luck on his side. His 6.19/240.00 defeated a crossed-up Frank Mancuso in the first round. John Force smoked the tires hard in round two, and Oswald advanced with a 6.18/241.93. Johnson had his parachute deploy early in the semifinal, and Mark won with a 6.41/222.22. In the final, he faced Beadle, and Raymond's 6.05/238 got the victory over Mark's 6.27/235.60. Still, with the runner-up finish, Oswald now sat second in the NHRA FC points chase with his 2,980 running behind Hawley's 3,730. Early in July, the team made the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Mark's 5.97/247.25 qualified second to Prudhomme at 5.91. Seeming bogus times were given in the first round to both Hawley and Oswald, but Mark's 5.62 at only 240.00 beat Force's 6.08/240. In the semifinal, he ran 6.07/243.90 to beat Ken Veney. He faced Prudhomme in the final, and another holeshot got the "Candies and Hughes" team the win. Mark's 6.34/245.245.23 beat the "Snake's" 6.31/241. The following week (July 10), he was in Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Mark qualified #4 but failed to reach the finals. Then came the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. In qualifying, Mark had made runs of 5.90/228.42, 5.99/235.36, and 5.93/251.39. His times set Low ET and Top Speed. His 5.88/248.61 in the first round beat Tom McEwen's 5.93/247. In round two, Segrini's 6.11/243 fell to Oswald's 5.92/249.30. Johnson's "Custom Body" car broke a rear end in the semifinal and a 5.95/243 advanced. In the final, he raced Force, and John's 6.00/245 finished second to Mark's 5.92/251.39. It was quite a performance, and it brought Oswald within 19 points of Hawley in the points chase. Hawley gained some points back at Denver. Oswald qualified #5 for the NHRA Mile High Nationals for the eight-car field with a 6.14/243.24, and Frank qualified #1. That set up a first-round meeting between the two that saw Hawley's 6.08/233 beat Mark's 6.18/242.58. Hawley went on to win. At Brainerd, he lost more points to Hawley. Mark qualified #4 at the NHRA Northstar Nationals with a 5.89/250.69. He beat Ron Correnti in round one, and in round two, his 5.95/248 took out Segrini. In the semifinal, the car broke against Bernstein. Hawley made the final and finished runner-up. The point spread was now at 8,097 for Frank to Mark's 6,600. Mark had earned enough points (1265) to qualify first for the Big Bud Shootout at Indy. In the first round of the specialty race, he ran 5.86/250.00 to beat Tom Anderson. Another 5.86 at 251.39 in the semifinal was not enough to beat Bernstein's 5.81/256. The actual race at the NHRA U.S. Nationals saw Oswald's 5.86/253.52 qualify #5. In the first round, his 6.15/236.22 defeated Dale Pulde's 6.27/234. In round two, Bernstein got him again. Mark's late 5.88/257.87 (Top Speed and a new track record) lost to Kenny's 5.93/250. The points now stood at 8,917 for Hawley to Oswald's 7,484. The next week (September 11), he picked up the win at the IHRA U.S. Open Championships at Rockingham. He qualified #3, and he set a 254.23 track speed record. He also set Low ET in the semifinal with his 5.83/253 beating Beadle. In the final, Pulde's 5.96 lost to Mark's 5.84. Going into the IHRA Fallnationals at Bristol, Oswald was also second in the IHRA's FC points chase. He was just 54 markers behind Beadle. The two qualified one-two, with Mark's 5.74/253.52 (Top Speed and Low ET) getting the pole. He soloed in the first round when Bernstein broke, and a 5.89 beat Correnti in the semifinal. In the other semifinal race, Beadle smoked the tires and lost to Pulde. Oswald was the IHRA FC Champion for '83, and in the final, he also won the race with his 5.79/252.80 topping Pulde's 5.85/245. In his funny car debut at Pomona, Oswald ran a 7.335/126.93 to DNQ. He ran 254.23 on March 11, 1983, at the 1983 Gators to become the fifth entry in the Crane Cams 250 MPH Club for Funny Car. Photo from '83 Cajun Nationals. NHRA time sheets credit him with a 5.621 Low ET in eliminations at Sanair. Frank Hawley was credited with a 5.716 in that round. It seems fishy, but it's on the sheets. Low ET for Top Fuel cars there was Richard Tharp's 5.662! Mark's booming 257.87 was actually a massive holeshot loss in round two at Indy; Kenny Bernstein treed him, .472 to .546, and then held on to take a 5.930/250 to 5.888/257.87 win (.032 second margin of victory - about 12 feet). Mark ran a 5.825 at NHRA Fremont for his second-best ET of the year. |
