Notes: When Leland Kolb entered the Modified Roadster ranks, he simply took the A/MR class over. He was unbeatable when he could keep his engine in one piece (he lost out at the '58 Nats with a blown piston). He started working out the new-car bugs at Lions on Sep. 6 (11.56 at 140.62 mph), Sep. 20 (12.07 at 132.15 mph), and Oct. 4 (10.59 at 142.40 mph). On Nov. 1 at Lions, he started a streak of top eliminator wins with 10.28 at 143.54 mph. The next day, he took a top eliminator win at Santa Ana with 10.41 at 142.00 mph. He took a class win at the D.R.I. meet at Riverside on Nov. 9 with 10.46 at 141.28 mph. He really turned some heads when he took a top eliminator win at Santa Ana with a blistering 9.07 at 151.27 mph on Nov. 23. At Chandler Associated Drag Strip in Arizona on Nov. 30. He set a national record with 9.98 and a fast 142.11 mph. Photo: Early Drag Racing Photos, p. 49, in Jalopy Journal, The H.A.M.B. -- MB |

Notes: In June, Odie Garnand and Larry Steinegger got Buddy Sampson to drive their blown Buick dragster. On June 22 at Chandler, Sampson garnered top eliminator with a 10.71 at 131.74 mph. The car was awarded the best-engineered car of the meet. On July 26, Sampson took another top eliminator win at Chandler. On Sep. 28, the car was sidelined after a rod went through the block, but Sampson still clocked the meet's top speed of 142.63 mph. Notes: West and Bloom's first try at turning this '47 Crosley into a drag race car was disappointing. They used the rear half of a straight Buick 8, making it a four-cylinder "power" plant. When they could only eke 75 mph out of it, they swapped the little motor out for a 1940 Buick Century. They also moved the driver from the front seat to the rear seat to accommodate the bigger motor. This change really improved their results: 104.34 mph. Photo: "Just curious (Phx. Hist.), p. 16, in Jalopy Journal, The H.A.M.B. -- MB |

Notes: Sefton spent $8,000 and four years building his pristine fuel roadster. It was a beauty--and it ran pretty fast, too. However in about early September at a race at Phoenix Associated Drag Strip (the Luke Field track), it caught fire on the starting line and burned to the ground. A total loss. Notes: By the end of the season, Sandy had set track records in A/G, B/G, A/A, and B fuel coupe classes at Perryville. He was all over the map. He started the year running in B/G, taking class wins on Feb. 6 (86.90 mph), May 1 (91.84 mph), setting a track record on June 5 (96.77 mph), and breaking the record again on July 3 (98.90 mph). Then he towed to Paradise Mesa for the 2-day Pacific Southwest Championship race with fellow Phoenix racers Carl Grimes and Bill Hopper on July 9/10. He got runner-up to Cooper-Ferre-Wayland in B/G, turning 98.63 mph. After that, he began experimenting with fuel and different setups in other classes back in Arizona. On Aug. 7 at Perryville, he set a B fuel coupe mark with 94.75 mph. He also ran in A/G and set the track record with 96.77 mph. On Oct. 30, he won the Blakely Trophy with a new track record in A/A at 101.42 mph. He teamed up with Harnack to run his coupe in B/A on Nov. 20, turning 99.22 mph. Photo: Just Curious (Phx. Notes: Turk ran a Merc flathead when he won the B/A class at Casa Grande's airport on Mar. 10. That was the second race held at the airport conducted by the Casa Grande Timing Association. His next win at the airport came on May 12. In that race, he had swapped out the Merc for a Cadillac engine and ran in C Altered. He turned 98.71 mph for the class win and took a top eliminator victory with 97.25 mph. On May 19 at Davis-Monthan TMA Drag Strip near Tucson, he won the B/A class with the Cad motor at 103.85 mph. At the monthly Perryville race on June 2, he won the D/A class with 105.88, staying with the Cad engine. With these better results, he stuck with the Cad motor for the rest of the season. At Davis-Monthan on June 16, he won B/A class with 105.90 mph. Back at Perryville on July 7, he took a B/A win with 105.45 mph. Photo: Hot Rod Deluxe, Nov. 2015, p. 58 -- MB |

Notes: In two and a half years, nineteen-year-old Carroll Hardy won 75 drag racing trophies. Working on the car out of his father's garage business in Abilene, he worked as a tool setter for U.S. Time Corp. Just a week before the National Championships at Oklahoma City; he blew his engine at Lubbock while turning the fastest time of his career in the supercharged gasser. That was on August 23, when he ran 12.1 at 121 mph. With only six days to fix the '58 Olds engine, he got it repaired in time to get to Oklahoma City just three hours before the registration deadline. Only after the races were underway did he learn that his blower had been ruined in the Lubbock explosion. He thought his hopes were dashed to do well with a loss of 100 horsepower from the inoperable supercharger. However, he came out on top of over 60 entries to take a win in the A/G class. During the meet, he also twisted five axles and burned out a clutch but was able to make the repairs in order to compete with great success. His best time during the meet was 13.53 at 103.56 mph.
