Notes: In 1981 we were low elapsed time during eliminations at the NHRA US Nationals at 5.7 (plus we won the race). Then we were once again low qualifier at the NHRA World Finals at Orange County with a 5.64 ET. Notes: Tom had an interesting NHRA season, running both his top fuel and funny car at most meets. Tom qualified #12 at Pomona at 6.866/215.31. In round one, he beat Don Cook, 6.80/212.76 to 7.73/199.55. Tom's car did not start in round two, sending Jim Dunn on a 7.10/164.23. single. At the Dallas Springnationals, Tom qualified #6 at 6.654/220.58. He won round one over Jim Paoli, 6.67/218.44 to 7.19/210.28, and took an easy 11.96/77.85 win in round two when Dennis Baca did not show. John Wiebe took a close 6.60/220.04 to 6.66/178.92 win over Tom in the third round. At the Summernationals, Tom qualified #4 at 6.698/221.67. Unfortunately, he fouled against Bill Hansen in round one, sending Hansen on a 7.15/207.85 win. McEwen missed the field at Indy. His 6.640/222.77 ended up as the third alternate. That was Tom's last NHRA national event of the year. He also ran 6.62 at Martin, Michigan, and 6.67 at the Irwindale Grand Prix in 1971. |
